Winter Woolies.

It's unheard of, I NEVER look forward to winter... but scrolling through these OOC (out of control) editorials on Oracle Fox today I actually got excited about layering for winter - and it's only January. These images have me dreaming of endless layering - woolens, heavy jewellery, fur... faux fur (never sure which is which in editorials these days).

Sorry we've been so absent these past few weeks - we've been having a rest and spending time with our families. We're both itching to do some spontaneous shoots with all the new stuff though, I can feel a few brewing as I write this... xx Lizzy & Spelly

Spell and I met Alushia of Alushia Sanchia on a design trip in Bali early this year. We instantly bonded over a mutual love of Stevie Nicks, 'aztec inspired' jewellery and sitting by the pool... oh Spelly and Alushia are both mothers of little blonde munchkins - so there was an extra maternal connection there. We adore her, her label, and her infectious laugh.

I wanted to share some images from one of Alushia's photo shoots - they're oh very Easy Rider meets Dark Desert Angel.

Pepitas Muchos Grazias

I got addicted to these little babies a while back when I was traveling around Mexico in a Winnebago with a (now X) boyfriend... And I've just found out they're super choc full of protien, iron, zinc and magnesium - so I'm encouraging the addiction...

(All photos above taken on my povo iphone... sorry Johnny's nikon wasn't handy) 

Salted Pepita Seed Recipe.

Each time we use a pumpkin I simply cut out the pulpy seed bit and rinse it off, then soak the seeds in the fridge over night.

I keep a small jar in the door of the freezer, to which i add each batch of soaked pumpkin seeds until the jar is full. When the jar is full, (or when I need a pepita hit) I fill it with water and leave in the fridge overnight to defrost.

Drain defrosted seeds and place on a paper towel. When patted dry simply place on a tray with a splash of olive oil and sea salt and bake in a preheated 180˚ oven for 10 mins or until golden. Eat them warm as a snack or keep in a jar and put on salads. Yummm!

Hot Town...Summer in the City.

This is a little lookbook shoot we did to show off a few of our Summer staples.

This was actually our very first studio look book shoot! Usually, we drag all our props and bits and pieces out into some sunlit field and soak up the natural inspiration and see where the day takes us – it was so weird to be surrounded by 4 white walls and electrical lighting. But it was a different experience and we loved it!

We love this little range, the pieces are so Spell... scattered soft rayons and silks and thrice-washed linens, little 'wear-every-single-day-of-summer-lace-shorts', turquoise feather prints, gypsy prints of lilacs and magenta... It's fun, and easy and wearable. We finished a few of the looks off with our Sun Chaser and Moon Chaser collars for a little bit of vintage afghan inspired bling.

Tropical Dreaming

Spelly and I are on another designing trip in Bali. Our minds are so full of ideas and designs and endless possibilities that sometimes we just look at eachother and burst out laughing!

Yesterday we took a break from designing in the city and took ourselves on a day-trip Ubud. The lush hillside town has a special place in my heart – on my first trip to Ubud (blogged here) I stumbled upon a silk painting factory and convinced them to take me on as an intern for a couple of days.

We had lunch at a dreamy organic cafe called Sari Organik set in in the middle of a huge expanse of rice paddy fields. As far as you could see lush green fields of unharvested rice spread out to the mountainous horizon. Storm clouds heavy with tropic thunder brewed in the distance. The location inspired a quick inspiro-shoot channeling that 'lone girl on a journey' feeling that we love!

Our Story...

My film-making fiance Johnny Abegg loves the story of how Spelly and I came together to create Spell. He's always said he wanted to capture the story and create a little clip to share. So he came into the studio one sunny Spring afternoon and sat us down and threw a camera in our faces.

And this is the brief version of events of how two sisters from Melbourne ended up in Byron Bay living their dreams...

Alyssa Johnson and Kelsey Krekeler met in their second year at the University of Cincinnati where they found commonalities in their aesthetic, aspirations, and values. They formed their brand during their last co-op quarter as an entrepreneurial endeavor. While learning a great deal from all of their experiences throughout school and internships, they felt they were missing something. They wanted the chance to bring their own passion and creativity to life. Close to graduation, they realized there was a certain niche in the jewelry market that they knew they could fill.

I listened to stories of her tour and life and imagined her take on it all!! So funny we are all human beings but Stevie is one super inspiring human to me!! I hope she never stops singing her beautiful songs."

We heart our intern!

Meg is in year 10 at a local high school, she has been doing work-experience with us this week and we love her! We've already offered her a job! (Meg in pics 3-5 above)

It's amazing how the right people find you at the right time! Natalie (our Spell HQ angel) literally walked in off the street at the beginning of the year, at the very moment I was typing up a job description trying to manifest our dream employee... we hired her on the spot and now we don't know what we'd do without her!

We get emails asking how we started Spell, or seeking advice in those early days of staring your out in the industry... the first thing I'd say is choose your fave label/enterprise and offer them your services for a a few weeks as an intern... What a wicked way to show off your mad skills!!

Demolition Derby

Tallow have entered a car into the Thrills Demolition Derby that's going down this Saturday night at the Brisbane Speedway. They paint bombed the derby car the other day in preparation. I love Ali's big cheeky grin - i think she's completely in her fluro coloured element!

Foxy Lady {Mandy Shadforth by Sybil Steel}

The gorgeous + uber-multi-talented photographer Sybil Steel collaborated with Mandy from Oracle Fox and Surf Collective NYC to bring us this gorgeous glimpse into an Aussie summer (and there's not a shrimp on the barbie in sight! Thank god!)

Mandy tripped on down to Byron for this little collaboration shoot (hair and make-up by our darling sister Luciana Rose!). I was lucky enough to see these three super-creative chicks in action because I happened to be there delivering some glitter, as you do.

The film of the shoot (below) is simply STUNNING! I love the song by the Villainares. By pure coincidence they bumped into Byron local Angus Stone and borrowed his car, you can see Mandy making it her own in the vid : )

Where the cacti meet the ocean...

The ocean and the desert. I've always loved how two completely polar opposite landscapes can give you the same feeling of exotic freedom.

In a photograph a palm tree and a cactus can give the same feeling even though one is lush and tropical and one is an arid desert dweller... When the desert meets the ocean - (Baja, California springs to mind...) it's like sensory overload for me. Add in some lime, a corona, the warm desert breath and a cool ocean breeze...

Rejoice the Hands

This week I started a Spell Tumblr. A huge dive into the bottomless inspir-ocean so to speak... Lost on a virtual desert island overflowing with endless inspiration images I threw a virtual 'message in a bottle' out on facebook asking people to post their fave tumblrs... One of the little gems I found (thank you Gabi from Moon to Moon!) was a jewellery label called Rejoice the Hands. OH MY HOLY JESUS!

This is what I've discovered about Rejoice the Hands by Ana Saldana:

Amber Road {New Spell Shoot}

Shooting at sunset is always a ticking time-bomb... you know that sun ain't gonna slow down for you, so you have to move with it. 

The abandoned train track that runs through Byron is such a beautiful place at sunset. The rusted iron tracks catch the rays of the sinking sun, and flowers and grass growing up from between the rocky surface sway in the evening breeze, and the salt in the air creates an amber mist swirling around in front of the lens. Each minute the light turns from apricot, to amber to mauve.

This early evening amber road was a perfect backdrop for our summer range... Available Now here.

Wild Flowers.

We have an unexplained patch of wild flowers growing in our front yard - I don't recall them being there last spring... and I don't recall dropping a packet of seeds there during winter... don't they say that bees are responsible? Perhaps they sucked on a sweet wild yellow daisy 2 towns over and then dropped the crumbs in our garden??

Johnny Abegg (my smouldering fiance) filmed and edited this stunning film The Bohemian Love Story (below) for The Lane.

Karissa Fanning's wedding aesthetic has a beauty so free flowing, romantic and free-spirited, even Johnny (yes he's a sensitive creative but he's still your typical aussie bloke) came home after the shoot wanting to 'free-form' on our wedding plans... the film he shot below is absolutely gorgeous. Wedding styling aside, I'd love to recreate this shoot for the sole purpose of having a picnic on the beach with my girlfriends... it's magical... enjoy.

Have you ever been subject to the show-ponying that is the post wedding beach photo shoot? Well that was us yesterday - but for us it was a post-fashion-parade shoot... We'd dressed our little goddesses up and thought what a waste not to take them down to the water front...

It was testament to my mad skills that I was able to get these shots without a lifesaver or the yellow & red flags, or some dude in Speedos in the back ground - because the beach was PACKED today!

Hearts' a Flutter.

Spelly and I are both Melbourne  girls – so for us the Melbourne cup conjures up memories of public  holidays, participating in sweeps (as many as possible), screaming your  horses name at the top of your lungs at a bbq and knowing that the  favourite NEVER wins (except when it’s Makybe Diva). It is a day when  Melbourne literally stops – dead in it’s tracks – to have a flutter.

So when the we were asked to be a part of an annual Melbourne Cup day fashion parade  we jumped in feet first. Byron Bay based labels Spell, Goddess of Babylon, Buffalo Girl & Pooch and Samba dressed the gorgeous ladies who walked the catwalk.

Now, I’ve been to my fair share of Race Day fashion parades and I can  tell you, I’ve never seen as many feathers, leather, turquoise and  flowey-flowey gypsy fabric as I did today! There were feather head  pieces, a tall spirit stick with dream catchers hanging off it and  Shayna wore a cowboy hat! It really was our own ‘Byron Bay’ take on  traditional race-day-attire.

Between us Spell and I won $4.

Mosquito Coast

On Saturday afternoon I sat on my papasan ($30 find from Heaths Collectables) reading an old issue of Frankie (that one with that gorgeous 'weddings' feature in it - one of my faves) gathering some inspiration for our wedding next year. The Mosquito net was comforting - I felt like a princess in a four poster bed.

The thing I figure about planning a wedding - if you're time poor then you have to spend a lot of money - and if you're money poor you have to spend lots of time doing it all yourself... I'm both kinds of poor haha. Um... ideas anyone??

Was talking on the phone to my girlfriend in Bondi and she was watching folk walk passed her window dressed up for Halloween... one dude was shirtless and dressed in tattered shorts, had a bushy beard and carried a soccar ball with a face on it (Wilson, we presumed)... crack up.

When I think of Rip Curl I think of the icey Autumn winds of Torquay, Victoria - and how we used to go down there for the Rip Curl Pro at Easter time. Your hair would give your face whiplash in the wind, and we'd perv at all the hot surfers and sneak into the Offshore Music Festival with fake wrist bands. Ahh the memories... the tragic, wonderful, under-age memories!

Recently Rip Curl Europe contacted us, asking us to send a package for a shoot they were doing in Spain... Of course we shipped off our fave pieces, lots of colour and swirling lilacs, turquoise and amimal prints.

But where there's photo shoots there's spontaneity - Alex told me that after the shoot in Hossegor they'd bumped into photographer Liora Basse of Paralléle Lab Blog who attends the famous school "Les Gobelins" in Paris, and so Rip Curl lent her our package. These are Liora's photos above - rocking out our Floral Tribe Kimono and a few other Spell pieces. I love her sketchy, raw style of photography.

Yellow Tips and Canyon Blues.

Our fave LA stylist Ashley Glorioso (and photographer Zoey Grossman) killed it again with this Planet Blue lookbook shoot. Am sure this shoot has done the blog rounds 100 times over by now but I don't care I love it and want it to go down in history on our blog-wallpaper.

Loving the fluro orange/yellow painted tips in the models already syrupy auburn hair (In Ashley's words Asia was a "foul mouthed badass from Belarus") – and she really made this shoot sizzzzle. I think my fave are the tasseled shorts in the first image - if anyone knows what label that is can you comment below!!

James Jean Dreaming.

James Jean is one of my all time favorite artists. His work is psychedelically enigmatic, a paradox, with his cotton candy colour palate and subject matter bordering on pure darkness. I've been intrigued by it in the same way I was intrigued (and spellbound) by Neil Gaiman's The Sandman back in the 90s.

I once had the ultimate privilege of taking a life drawing class with him on one of tours to Australia and I have never been more blown away with the use of colour and flowing undefined lines.

The wonderful thing about being inspired is that that inspiration can turn into action - an if that action is spurred on by inspiration,  then the intention behind that action is usually a positive one.

High Tea {recipe}

This week I found a whopping big bag of almond meal at Santos (our local wholefood store), I always thought almond meal was super pricey but this bag was only $6 or something. So today I baked. It was another roaring "gluten free" success and I wanted to share:

* * *

~ Flourless Orange Tea Cake with Blood Orange Syrup ~

2 oranges

4 eggs

half cup brown sugar* + half cup caster sugar

3 cups almond meal (or grind almonds in food processor)

1 teaspoon of baking powder (gluten free if you like)

Syrup:

1 extra orange (or blood orange) for syrup.

3/4 cup of sugar

Preheat Oven to 180 degrees, line 20cm round tin roughly with baking paper.

Boil oranges in saucepan of water for 1 hour, top up water as necessary. Cool oranges off in cold water, then place the oranges in a food processor (pips and all) and blitz to a paste.

Beat eggs and sugar together, add baking powder, then stir in oranges and gently fold in almond meal.

Pour into baking tin and bake for 1 hour.

To make the Syrup, using an orange zester (or using a sharp knife and then slicing finely) remove all the rind from extra orange and boil in water for 5 minutes to soften. Drain and then return to pan with juice of 1 orange. Add sugar and place over low heat and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes or until the sugar dissolves and the syrup thickens.

Turn cake onto a serving plate. Use a skewer to gently prick the top. Spoon over syrup. Cut into wedges to serve.

*recipe originally called for only caster sugar but tried to be a bit healthier with the brown sugar.

I received a little parcel in the mail today, a handful of the most lovely nutmeg brown and cream owl feathers (sucked in Australian Customs!).  I just know the lovely ladies at Sugarhigh+Lovestoned found them some place that I wish I was right now... Thank you chickies! 

I've been following their little 'Me-and-Bobby-McGee-esque' roadtrip on Born to be Wild. So while I'm at it:

"Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the train
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained
Took us all away to New Orleans

I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna

Thunderbird Totem.

Anyone who's visited us at our design studio in Byron has probably met out right-hand-wonder-woman Natalie (she's also the smouldering Amazonian like goddess in the pics above). Spelly and I don't know what we'd do without her.  Her energy calms and grounds us and she is the force behind a lot of what goes on behind the scenes at Spell HQ.

The Tee she's wearing is our Thunderbird Totem Tee and we're so excited because it's our very first collaboration piece. The image on the front of the tee is designed and illustrated by the gorgeously talented Julia Keddell of Little Navajo Blog. Based out of New Zeland, Julia captured our totem perfectly - we love the signature Spell imagery of crystals and the delicate feathered bone breast plate which is a strong feature in our range this season.

 Q&A With Julia Keddle of Little Navajo:

What do you think about when you're designing for a collaboration like this?
I love collaborating on projects like this that allow you to be creatively free to produce artwork. So I guess I think about the brief, the client's customer and what I would like to wear and combine all that with current inspirations that I have in my head. Once I've got my direction I don't really think a heck of a lot - I like to start illustrating and see where that goes, and from there I can adjust and collage the illustrations when I photoshop them for printing.

How did you know we were putting little quartz crystals in our collection this season haha?
I wish it was because I secretly lived down the road from you in Byron Bay and had a peeping tom view of your workroom, but it's probably more along the lines of the fact that we both love quartz crystals!

What is your all time fantasy 'i'm living my dream' job?
It's quite achievable and currently being 'fake-but-real-planned' with a lovely friend, starting up my own island dream of creative work and play... and I would definitely make it so that 4.30pm was Bintang and beach sunset time. I have it pretty good getting to escape into my creative zone and create illustrations for amazing people like Spell & The Gypsy though!

Raw Cacao Love. {recipe}

My darling girlfriend and fellow comfort-food-loving Taurean Candice, gave me this Raw Cacao Brownie recipe. I pottered around the kitchen this lovely Sunday afternoon making a batch and holy moly – they are so, (SO!!!) damn good I had to share it. (Gluten Free, sugar free*, dairy free, guilt free... woo!)

Here's the down low:
2 cups walnuts

1 cup raw cacao powder

2 and a half cups fresh dates

1 cup lightly chopped almonds

1 heaped tablespoon of cold pressed coconut oil (optional**)

1/4 teaspoon salt

Blend walnuts in a food processor until floury. Then add in the salt and cocao powder. Add in the dates and coconut oil and blitz in food processor until combined. Empty into a bowl and stir through almonds. Press into a 25cm square backing tin. Refrigerate for an hour then cut into squares. Keep in the fridge. Indulge!!

* I say guilt free, which is relative to the fact I usually down an entire block of chocolate on my own, so the natural sugar in the dates doesn't worry me.
** Original recipe didn't have the coconut oil but my darling friend Sarah (Sarah Wilson) keeps telling me I have to eat as many good fats (coconut oil, avocados etc) as possible so I added it in.

Mum's Batik Skirt.

Floating around the hinterland on a work day ain't too shabby! On Wednesday Spelly and I went on a 'crystal seeking mission' at Crystal Castle and of course I tried to take the sneaky back-streets through the Hinterland and got lost. It doesn't really matter when you get lost in these parts though, because a detour almost always ends in the discovery of a romantically dilapidated corrugated iron shed, or perfect field of daisies or some such lovely location perfect for a quick photo shoot.

The first lot of pics are of Spell swirling around in our Mum's old Batik skirt. Isn't it awesome when you can inherit your mums old clothes from the 70s? I've posted a photo below of mum wearing the same skirt when we were just little girls. I remember I used to hide under it in public if I was feeling particularly timid (which was a lot of the time when I was little), the split made for easy access.

Highway Revisited.

I've been tracking the movements (through twitter mainly) of a few Aussie Bloggers who were in NY for NYFW and have now trekked over to LA for a few extra adventures... The lovely Jessica & Nicole (Tuula Vintage / Gary Pepper Vintage) have had me dreamily reminiscing my past journeys around the US.

I remember feeling like America was a big gift, wrapped up for me in a thousand black ribbon highways... I loved learning that if a highway was prefixed by an 'i' you knew it would take you across state borders – and that North-to-south highways were odd-numbered and East to west highways were even-numbered, so you always had an idea of which direction you were traveling – and if you were hungry you could always stop off at Taco Bell for a 79c taco!

Loved dressing all in white today with this bell-armed open stitched pullover by Free People. Just got our Little White Fox dresses in - so of course had to steal one for myself. Last month we posted our C A S T A W A Y photo shoot.

I think the images captured a moment you may have experienced in the height and warmth and ecstacy of Summer – the feeling of being all alone, on a beach, with nothing but some seashells, some driftwood and your own curious self for company. (If you were draped in turquoise, fur and feathers at the time - all the better.)

One thing we didn't mention was that my boyfriend Johnny Abegg, who has become quite the expert at maneuvering around behind the scenes at photo shoots, so stealthy, unassuming and quiet-as-a-mouse that you almost forget he's there, was shooting a few images on his Nikon D7000. I edited this little film from the footage he got - I hope you like it.

Yesterday evening I arrived home from work with 5 minutes of beautiful evening sunlight left so I ran out and picked some flowers as the sun set. Johnny followed me out and took some photos and said I looked 'flowey'.

White Sands.

Spelly and I went for our first Spring walk and swim this week. The sand is still cool from the mild early-spring mornings and the ocean is clear and inviting. This morning I saw a whale and her calf just off the shore and a frill neck lizard in the path. (Oh and we had a snake in Spell HQ today! Sorry about bombarding our facebook page with pics of the snake but we were kind of excited!)

I've been collecting these Sandy images for a while and thought today was the perfect day to share them with you.

Bumming around HQ.

Friday afternoon - the sky can't decide what it wants to be, so it's settled on sultry. (Has anyone seen that 'throw mumma from the train' movie where Billy Crystal has writers block – "the night was... moist" haha) Anyway here's  a few lazy afternoon shots of Spell HQ.  It's a humble little studio but you can't be in here and not get a bit inspired. It's where all the magic happens - and even though Spelly's bumming around in her tracky dacks she still looks so Spell :)

Tipsy Gypsy

Last Saturday night the girls and I ventured out to the house of our darling girlfriend Ali Mandalis (the surf-gypsy-designer-extraordinaire behind Tallow) for her Tipsy Gypsy birthday bash. Her divine home is a stunning dusty-orange Moroccan-style stone castle with a goldmine of romantic gypsy decorations! I was in heaven!  

So many yummy bright colored fabrics, tassels, head scarves, roses, candles, skull ornaments, and vintage-retro paintings... and the view looked out onto our gorgeous town in Byron bay lit only by the moon and the stars and the flashing globe from the lighthouse. Luckily the weather held out and the surprisingly warm winter breeze skipped straight off Broken Head beach onto our skin.

Margaritas aplenty... and lots of dancing... Such a wicked night! xxx Spelly

Decadence and Deliverance

Last night I spent the evening with girlfriends, eating chilli Con Carne by a toasty fireplace. I felt safe, warm and protected. Late in the evening when I left to go home had to walk to my car via a steep driveway in pitch black darkness. There were no streetlights and my iphone had run out of battery so I had no torch - I was engulfed in the darkest cloak of night.

I walked through the bush, one foot in front of the other with my arms outstretched listening to the bats in the trees above me. Fear grew - I'm not sure what I was expecting to attack me - the bats, a spider or a gun toting madman, but when I finally got to the safety of my car I brushed my hair for stray spiders and turned my lights on high beam to ward off - whatever was out there.

The experience inspired today's Friday post ; )

We grew up with our dad always saying he "felt like an American trapped in an Australian's body..." I think he always wished that as refugees fleeing Latvia after WWII his parents had traveled to America instead of Queanbeyan, NSW.

I think this could also be said of our friend Terry of Buffalo Girl - this similar affinity with the USA I mean. On her return from her US Road trip this month I could see it in her eyes - she was hooked. It's in her blood. Under her skin. She's a cowgirl at heart and I'm sure it won't be long before she finds herself back 'home' on the range somewhere down in New Mexico...Colorado...Texas...
